Dying Light 2: How Different are the Zombies and Monsters?

Every single human in Dying Light 2 is infected and darkness further increases the infection rate turning the human into a zombie. Zombies in Dying Light 2 have an evolutionary mechanic behind them and have to progress through each respective stage to mutate into different kinds of zombies.

Even the player themselves can begin to get infected if they remain in darkness for long, this infection rate can be reversed through UV exposure or UV mushrooms. This whole infection mechanic is dubbed the “Infected Life Cycle”. Once you finish reading this guide, we recommend going through our beginners guide for helpful tips.

Viral

The Viral is the initial state when the human starts to get infected. They are the freshly bitten humans and show signs of humanity left within them. They haven’t lost their mind totally and are very fast and dangerous. They best try to avoid the sun other wise they began to decay from the UV.

Biters

Virals slowly devolve into Biters, which are your basic zombie archetype. They try to catch the humans to either infect them or eat them. This is the point they lose their humanity. Sunlight is very dangerous to them and they are not as swift as their lesser cousin Virals.

Degenerate

Viral’s last stage of evolution is the Degenerate. They are your weakest form of zombies which are decaying. The more sunlight the Biter is exposed to the weaker the Degenerate form will be. If a Biter somehow stayed away from the sun the Degenerate won’t be so nimble. They don’t pose much threat to the player but with enough of them they can be a nuisance especially combined with stronger zombies.

Volatile

Volatiles are the evolution of the infected. They are intensely dangerous and light-footed. Stealth is advised when dealing with them as they can alert other zombies to your location and would rip the player to shreds if they get the hold of them. Open areas are best avoided when Volatiles are present as they can out run the player, use tight spaces like building interiors or side roads to dodge them. High level weaponry is required to effectively deal with them otherwise run like wind brother!

Demolisher

The largest of the infected, the Demolisher is a towering presence. They are muscle heavy infected due to intense mutation from the virus. Their right arm is bigger than the left and jaws looks like that of a Volatile. They can break down walls when pursuing the player and use large items in the environment to hurl towards the player. Be extra careful as they rush towards the player as soon as they spot them but are slow generally and can be easily out maneuvered.

Drowner

These are new and the most mysterious of the zombie types. They are told to be water zombies with not much other information. As the name suggests they can be swimming zombies that ambush the player when near their pools. The unique thing about these is they are dependent on the decision the players take. Taking a different decision might result the player not encountering the drowner at all.

Bolter

These are non hostile zombies. They run away as soon as they spot the player and don’t even alert others. They are a piñata of sorts as if you catch and kill them they might drop some valuable goodies.

Goon

These scary monstrosities pose quite a threat. Their tanky characters have a ground pound technique that has an area of effect to it getting close to them makes them easier to deal with but staying close is a risk in itself.

These are the walking alarms of the zombie world. They wont attack the player outright but would alert every other enemy in the vicinity and trigger the chase. They are difficult to approach as their screams will stun the player. They easier to deal with through stealth. They are identified with their distinct yellow glow.

Banshee

These are extremely acrobatic zombies and can lunge on to the player from afar. They use other zombies as jumping boards to cover the distance to the player and can even retreat once they are threatened and wait for their next opening to attack. They are very smart for a bunch of brain dead zombie.

Revenant

That’s an evil looking zombie right there. Though he looks weak don’t undermine it as he can be the most difficult to deal with. They have a plethora of moves from range to close quarter. Not only that they can raise zombies out of the ground and buff them using a poison mist which hurts the player as well. Even writing about him makes me scared.

Wasay has never set boundaries on what type of games he likes, he has dabbled in many genres but none can run the test of time as a good single-player experience regardless of AAA or Indie. Narrative-based and Soulsborne are his weakness. His all-time favorites are God of War, Hollow Knight, Marvel's Spiderman, Elden Ring, Nier: Automata, Bloodborne and he can go on and on.
